Description of Talk

The doctor and patient story took place after the conclusion of a larger morning meeting/conference that neither Dr. Cavanagh nor I participated in. The doctor presented an enthusiastic, amazingly clear, and concise overview of SCD, new patient care plans, drug therapies, and protocols that were revolutionary in nature and, if implemented nationally, could dramatically improve patient care and improve the lives of patients nationally.

In my presentation I discussed how I've remained crisis- and hospitalization-free for over 10 years and how my path towards wellness was born out of frustration with inconsistent and sometimes inhumane care received in emergency rooms.

Patients to quickly return to their lives and how a horrible ED visit can result in an unwarranted, long, and exponentially expensive hospitalization.

The difference is a quick transition from the waiting room to the ED bed, the quick and adequate administering of pain meds, and kind and courteous care.

I discuss my work with patient groups and my attempts to teach patients how to navigate care and cultivate better patient-doctor ED physician relationships.

I also discussed my concerns for the thousands of patients who have given up on seeking care in emergency departments and, as a result, are risking their lives, suffering in silence, and unable to live productive lives.

This presentation took place after a larger board meeting of emergency room physicians with a modest-sized audience in a historic and beautiful setting.

The physician presented a wonderful overview of SCD that included many of the new ideas, practices, and procedures that will improve long-term and overall care for patients and for those suffering from painful crises.

The patient's story included background on my wellness journey, experiences regarding inconsistent care, and my experiences.
